MIRACLES AT PALANI
At that time devotees had to cross through several streams, rivers and forest to reach Palani temple. One such river is Nalkasi, near Ottenchattiram where water floods through the banks of the river at this Thai month. Devotees from other villages will wait for Aarumuganar’s hoping Kavadi since he will make way through the river. Praying to Lord Muruga, Aarumuganar sprinkles the sacred ash upon the river and touches with his pirambu (stick). The water level of the river recedes and devotees with Kavadis’ will follow Aarumuganar’s hoping Kavadi. At Palani, the temple authorities would wait for the arrival of Arumuganar’s hoping Kavadi to do the ucchi kaala poojai at 12pm. Such is the fame of Arumuganar’s hoping Kavadi.
Once few people who want to desanctify Aarumuganar’s Kavadi viratham, tied up a vessel with fish kulambu in his Kavadi. As Aarumuganar was only in the consciousness of Lord Muruga, he was unaware of this incident. But the All-knowing God, turned the situation to make the people aware of Aarumuganar’s benevolence.. While Aarumuganar was crossing the river with fish curry, tied up to the Kavadi, the dead fishes in the curry gained life and jumped out of the vessel to the river! Evil deed turned to good deed! Such is Aarumuganar's tapas!
ARUMUGANAR BECAME ARUMUGATH THAMBIRAN
Knowing her brother’s ardent love for Palani Dhandayuthapani, Arumuganar’s sister Veeralakshmi ammal, became eager to visit Palani murugan. Arumuganar could not convince his sister about the dangers in travelling to palani on those days with poor transportation facilities, dangerous forests and rivers. She pestered him to take her with him on Thaipoosam day to Palani. On a Thaipoosam day, the whole village people sent off the brother and sister to Palani. As his sister was accompanying him, Arumuganar who hoped with his Kavadi in about three hours to Palani, was unable to travel in that speed. So it took some more time to reach Palani.
The Palani temple authorities waited for a long time for Arumuganar’s Kavadi to arrive, but finally offered Pooja to Lord Dhandayuthapaani and closed the temple. Arriving late, Arumuganar found his favourite Lord Dhandayuthapaani’s temple closed. Unable to have the dharshan of Lord Dhandayuthapaani, Aarumuganar cried to the Lord, “ I have been contemplating on you all the time, to have your Dharshan on this Thaipoosam day. I have been waiting all over the year for this day. I was anxious to sing your glories in front of you. But lo! Your temple in closed and I could not sing in front of you. My tongue has failed to serve the purpose for which it is intended to. I don't need my tongue anymore which doesn’t sing the attributes of my Lord”, saying this he cut off his tongue.
Deeply moved by his ardent devotee’s faith, Lord Murugan appeared before Aarumuganar and called him, “Aarumugath thambirane!”, The Lord pacified him and said, "It’s my wish to give you my darshan that which caused you a delay to arrive here.” Aarumuganar’s tongue got back to the normal state. Then Lord Murugan said to him to build a temple in his hometown Thiruthangal and worship him there all throughout the year and not to come over to Palani. Aarumuganar now titled as ARUMUGATH THAMBIRAN thought that he had not that much of money to build the temple. He then heard Lord Murugan saying, “Return home. You will find a way”.
TREASURE PATH AND REFORMING THE THEIVES
While on return from Palani temple to home, near Ottenchatiram, Aarumugath thambiran and his sister stayed in a place to cook and rest at night. While digging the ground to have a pit for fire, (around which three stones were placed in the centre of which firewood is placed, upon which a vessel or mud pot is kept for cooking) Lord Murugan showed them a treasure pot full of gold. Blessed by the Lord they saved the treasure and slept. Few thieves were watching this and when the brother and sister were in deep sleep, they stole the treasure and went away.
They would have not even had taken a few steps, suddenly there was a loud yelling from them. Aarumugath thambiran woke up and saw the thieves suffer in pain. Their eye sight was lost. They got frightened, repented and surrendered to Aarumugath thambiran and pleaded him to restore their eye sight. Aarumuganar felt for these thieves, and prayed to Lord Murugan for their normal eye sight. He gave them the sacred ash ‘thiruneeru’ and the thieves got back their eye sight. The thieves realized the greatness of the munficient and asked for his pardon. They changed entirely to good character and asked for his remedy. Aarumugath thambiran consoled them and asked them to provide food (annadhanam) for people travelling on foot to Palani temple. They did as per Aarumugath thambiran’s instructions and even now we can find the annadhanam shelter spot at Ottenchatiram serving food for the devotees climbing The Palani Hills on foot.
TEMPLE SERVICE
Aarumugath thambiran on his return to his hometown, with the treasure given by the Almighty, constructed a temple similar to Palani Dhandayuthapaani temple and worshipped him daily. As said by Lord Murugan, he took his hoping Kavadi to this temple itself. Thiruthangal was graced by Lord Murugan’s temple and Thaipoosam celebrations especially Aarumugath thambiran’s one leg hoping Kavadi.
SAMADHI
Years passed by. Aarumugath Thambiran predicted his time to unite with the eternal world. He called his adiyars and village leaders and spoke to them to Enshrine him opposite to Lord Dhandayuthapaani's sannidhi All community people accepted his wish. That year the very next day after his ThaiPoosam kavadi dedication to Lord Dhandayudhapaani, Aarumugath thambiran attained the feet of Lord Murugan.
Due to caste differences, those people who accepted Aarumuguanar’s wish to Enshrine him opposite to Lord Murugan’s sannidhi opposed it. Unable to bury thambiran in his requested place, he was Enshrined on the northern part of the village, on the banks of Aalavurani river, where Dhandayuthapaani's temple bell sound could be heard.
People thought that after the death of Thambiran his sanctity would have declined and so they reneged on their pledge. But the Almighty, who is Truth itself, tested these untruly people. Those people who reneged upon their word, suffered from diseases and became economically challenged. The growth of these high caste people tumbled. Now they realized their mistake and prayed Thambiran to forgive them. After their realization and truthful prayers to Thambiran, their life prospered gradually. They erected a one-stoned pillar in which they lit a lamp daily. Now also we can see that pillar just opposite to Dhandayuthapaani’s temple.
